New Jersey, Maryland, and Hawaii have the highest median household income in the the United States, according to a report by the Census Bureau.

Real (that is, inflation-adjusted) median household income in the United States climbed between 2005 and 2006, reaching $48,200, according to the report.

However, real median earnings of both men and women who worked full time, year-round declined between 2005 and 2006. The median earnings for men fell 1.1 percent to $42,300 in 2006. The last time men saw real median earnings below $42,300 was in 1997. In 2006, real median earnings for women dropped 1.2 percent to $32,500. The last time women saw real median earnings less than $32,500 was in the year 2000.
