Shift Operation

National Summary

Adopting a work schedule that includes several shifts may better meet a company’s business needs than the traditional 8-hour workday, including decreasing costs, increasing production, improving safety, providing customer service on a 24-hour basis, and a more efficient use of skilled personnel. The most common shift schedule divides the day into three relatively equal 8-hour shifts, although there are many variations on this schedule. Consideration must be given to employees who will be required to work on a second or third shift schedule. Typically, employers offer employees who work the later shifts a shift differential as an incentive.
