 Legal Analysis

Unemployment compensation is regulated by the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) and jointly administered by federal and state authorities. Under FUTA, individual states are free to set limits on weekly benefit amounts, unemployment tax rates, taxable wage bases, and unemployment eligibility and disqualification requirements. Unemployment benefits are financed by a tax on a certain portion of wages paid to employees; this "taxable wage base" varies from state to state.

Unemployment Claims Fall 
In the week ending December 13, the number of initial claims dropped to 353,000 after seasonal adjustment, Department of Labor reported.
Federal Unemployment Program Set to Expire 
The federal program that grants up to 13 weeks of additional unemployment benefits to jobless workers who have exhausted their state benefits is set to expire before the end of the year unless Congress acts to renew the program, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
