Longtime Town Employee Is Cat’s Meow

The Killingworth, Connecticut, Rodent Control Officer has gotten excellent performance reviews over her 15 years on the job. And eschewing maternity leave, this employee gave birth in the workplace. Now she needs some help with her medical bills.

As the daughter of the former Rodent Control Officer, Miss Rascal got her job through nepotism. “She’s done a good job,” Killingworth Town Clerk Linda Dudek told the New Haven Register, but some recent healthcare problems has left this long-term employee with $300 in medical bills—to a veterinarian!

Rodent Control Officer Rascal is a long-haired gray cat with a fluffy tail, who takes her job seriously, leaving her prey out for her supervisors to admire. And she goes beyond her job description of keeping unwanted mice out of the workplace by also greeting visitors to Town Hall.

Rascal has recycled an old electric typewriter by using it to initiate “nap breaks.” The employees of Town Hall chip in to buy her food and other necessities, but some recent dental infections requiring minor surgery left her with the medical bills since she didn’t qualify for health insurance. To help, her fellow colleagues left a donation jar on the counter in the clerk’s office.

Dudek says the sick leave and bills haven’t jeopardized Rascal’s job, stating that “after 15 years, she is almost vested!”
