Telemarketers Say 'Do Not Call' List Will Cost 2 Million Jobs 
A group representing the telemarketing industry has filed a lawsuit to block the national do-not-call list, saying it would cost two million jobs and would violate their rights under the First Amendment, the San Jose Mercury News reports.



Study: One in Five Experienced Layoff in Past Few Years 
About 18 percent of workers said they had been laid off at some point during the years 2000-2003, according to a new study from Rutgers University and the University of Connecticut.



New Claims for Jobless Benefits Fall 
The number of Americans filing initial unemployment claims fell by a seasonally adjusted 29,000 to 386,000 last week, the lowest level of new claims in five months, the Department of Labor announced.



Unemployment Rate Climbs to 6.1 Percent 
Employers shed 17,000 jobs from their payrolls and the unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

More Connecticut employers are utilizing a program in the state that pays partial unemployment benefits to employees working reduced schedules, the Hartford Courant reports.



Congress Passes Extension to Jobless Benefits Program  
Congress approved last week legislation that would extend, by seven months, a federal emergency aid program for unemployed workers, USA Today reports.



Jobless Benefits Extension Expires Soon  
A federal aid program that provides unemployed workers with 13 to 26 additional weeks of jobless benefits is set to expire on May 31.



Unemployment Back Up to 6 Percent in April 
The unemployment rate jumped back up to 6.0 percent in April, and payroll employment dropped by 48,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.



Mass Layoffs Ease in March 
Employers initiated 1,170 mass layoff actions involving a total of 109,838 workers in March 2003, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.



West Continues with Highest Jobless Rate in February  
In February, Hawaii reported the lowest unemployment rate, 3.0 percent. Oregon continued to post the highest jobless rate, 7.3 percent.
