Washington -- BLS statistics released at 8:30 A.M. today provided an unwelcome surprise for the nation's employers. With many recent signs such as slackening production and rising corporate layoffs in evidence, most experts were predicting that the unemployment figures released today would show a rate of 4.1%. Confounding them, the rate declined to its 30-year low figure again of 3.9%.
NEW YORK -- The 47,687 job cuts announced in September escalated the third quarter job-cut total to 168,875, the largest quarter in a year. If the fourth quarter follows the pattern of the last five years, it could leave even more workers jobless heading into the new year.

Alexandria, VA - Salaries for many human resource (HR) positions are rising faster than overall U.S. salaries, according to a new survey conducted by consulting firm William M. Mercer, Incorporated in conjunction with SHRM. Overall salaries in the U.S. have increased an average of 4.2% per year for the last five years, while HR jobs of every type had higher increases. The value of technical recruiters reflects the greatest increase, as their salaries increased 10%.
The unemployment rate was 4.0 percent in June, continuing the same low rates seen in May. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also says that average hourly earnings increased by 5 cents over the month and by 3.6 percent over the year.
