Salaries Continue to Differ Dramatically 
At a base salary of $29,200, an executive secretary would be competitively paid in Memphis, Tenn., yet considerably underpaid in San Jose, Calif., where the average base salary for the same position is $53,600 annually--or 84 percent more.



Victims' Fund Treating Male, Female Earners Equally 
The federal Victim Compensation Fund, set up to compensate victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has awarded the first major settlement to recognize women as men - at least in terms of future lost wages, according to the publication American Lawyer.



Census Puts Wage Gap at 73 Cents on the Dollar 
Women in the United States earned only 73 cents for every dollar men were paid in 1999, though the gap narrowed during the 1990s, new census figures show.



Gender Gap Growing 

It may not be news that female managers make less money than men in many industries, but a new congressional study finds that the wage gap actually deepened during the economic boom years of 1995 to 2000.

Census data collected between 1960 to 1995 shows major changes in maternity leave and employment patterns, indicating longer-term commitments by women to the workplace, the U.S. Census Bureau reports.



Merrill Lynchs Very Public Employee Dispute

Morgan Stanley Faces EEOC Action 
Executives at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter tell The New York Times that they expect the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to file a sex discrimination suit against the firm as soon as this week.



Wage Gap Persists for Women 
The magazine Working Woman reports that its 22nd-annual salary survey reveals little change in the wage gap, with women in the workforce still earning only 76 cents for every dollar earned by men.



Women Turning to Courts For Equal Pay 
The lawsuit filed recently against Wal-Mart by a group of female employees underlines the growing frustration among women about how much they are paid in comparison to men, the Newhouse News Service reports.



Senate Looking to Bolster Equal Pay Act 
Hoping to capitalize on their new power as members of the Senate's majority party, several key Democratic senators called this week for passage of a bill meant to bolster the Equal Pay Act.
