Unemployment Claims Fall 
In the week ending December 13, the number of initial claims dropped to 353,000 after seasonal adjustment, Department of Labor reported.



Federal Unemployment Program Set to Expire 
The federal program that grants up to 13 weeks of additional unemployment benefits to jobless workers who have exhausted their state benefits is set to expire before the end of the year unless Congress acts to renew the program, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.



DOL Repeals Birth and Adoption Regs 
The Department of Labor has issued a final rule to remove Birth and Adoption Unemployment Compensation (BAA-UC) regulations, which allowed states to use their unemployment insurance trust funds to pay workers taking leave for the birth or adoption of a child.



Congress Passes Extension to Jobless Benefits Program  
Congress approved last week legislation that would extend, by seven months, a federal emergency aid program for unemployed workers, USA Today reports.
