Can You Discipline Employees For Discussing Pay? 
In many companies, one of the policies covered in orientation is the one that tells employees to avoid discussions about their pay. Some companies take the policy further, disciplining or even firing employees who violate that policy. Be aware, though, that a policy forbidding employees to discuss their salaries among themselves may violate the law.



Bill Includes Tax Credit for Wage Differentials 
Small employers who pay wage differentials to employees on active duty in the National Guard and Reserves would receive a tax credit, under H.R. 6081, which recently passed in the Senate and House of Representatives.



Did Paycheck Errors 'Blow' His Exempt Status? 
A Massachusetts customer relations manager worked for a motorcycle retailer for about a year. After he was terminated, he sued the former employer for overtime, contending that two of his paychecks for the year had been wrong. From his point of view, that meant he wasn't a salaried, exempt worker.



HR Assistants Will See 5.3% Salary Increase in 2008 
Starting salaries of human resource assistants will increase an average of 5.3 percent in 2008. Average starting salaries for human resource assistants will range between $27,250 to $37,500. This is among the findings of the recently released OfficeTeam 2008 Salary Guide, which reports on starting salaries for administrative staff.

Dept. of Labor Says Katrina Cleanup Contractor Misclassified Workers  
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has filed a lawsuit against Benitez Drywall LLC, a Houston-based drywall company, and its owners, accusing them of regularly misclassifying employees as independent contractors and failing to pay overtime.

Financial Incentives for Wellness: Showing Everyone the Money! 
One major obstacle HR professionals have had when it comes to implementing a wellness program with financial incentives for employees has been selling the program to top management. Michael F. Carter, Vice President of Hay Group, a global consulting firm, says he's got the evidence that HR can come armed with when a CFO, CEO or other top executive says "Show me the money!"--that is, the savings that will result in the implementation of such a program.



Census Bureau Publishes Statistical Abstract 
The U.S. Census Bureau has published the 2003 edition of its Statistical Abstract of the United States, a 1,000-plus-page document crammed with statistics ranging from the esoteric (bet you didn't know America’s farmers dug up more than 23 million tons of potatoes in 2002) to the highly useful, at least when it comes to compensation.
