Ringing in the New Year with Compliance Deadlines

Section 409 of the Internal Revenue Code and its final regulations make major changes in the tax treatment of many compensation practices and impose tougher standards for how compensation is promised and paid, as well as how it is taxed for federal income tax purposes. The deadline for compliance with the final regulations arrived on January 1, 2009.
