How We Got Here from There: The Evolution of Benefits
If employee benefits can be broken down to their absolute cost--in other words, if 1+1 always = 2--then companies can eliminate benefits altogether, simply increasing pay to offset the loss. It would be a simple and transparent solution. If that concept is making your hair stand on end, it is likely that you understand that more is at stake.

Compensation Q&A
Questions from our Ask the Experts archives

We accrue our vacation time, but employees can take their vacation time at any time. For example, they can take a week of vacation in January even though they do not have that time accrued yet. If an employee voluntarily leaves and they have taken more vacation than he or she accrued, can we deduct the difference from their last paycheck? Also, I would like to know how other companies handle vacation accrual.

Hot Topic: Minimum Wage

On Thursday, July 24, the federal minimum wage rises from $5.85 per hour to $6.55 per hour. The increase will affect employers in most states. However, in a recent poll, when we asked "Will your organization have to pay higher wages as a result of the new federal minimum wage?," only 13 percent of respondents replied "Yes."

In this week's Compensation Hot Topic, an HR Forum subscriber asks colleagues, "Who is affected by this change?" The responses were eye-opening and thought-provoking. Take a look, then join the conversation--or start one of your own! It's easy and it's free.
