Google is the best place to work in 2007, according to an annual ranking by Fortune magazine.

The magazine gave Google the top spot on its 10th annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, noting the benefits the company offers to employees, including free gourmet meals. Google was also the fastest-growing company on the list, adding more than 2,000 jobs last year. The company is such a hot place to work that it receives 1,300 resumes per day.

Genentech dropped from first place last year to second place this year. Wegmans Food Markets, which has made an appearance on the list in all ten years, slipped from second place last year to third place this year. Seventeen other companies have made the list each of the last 10 years.

Rounding out the top ten this year are: the Container Store, Whole Food Markets. Network Appliance, S.C. Johnson & Son, Boston Consulting Group. Methodist Hospital System, and W.L. Gore & Associates.

Among the 100 companies on the magazine's list, 82 offer telecommuting, up from 18 a decade ago. Seventy of the 100 companies offer domestic partner benefits, up from 28 a decade ago.

The list is compiled for the magazine by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco. This year, 446 companies applied to be on the list.

Two-thirds of a company's score is based on a survey sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. The survey asks about things such as attitudes toward management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The remaining third of the score comes from an evaluation of each company's responses to the institute's culture audit, which includes questions about demographic makeup, pay, and benefits programs, and open-ended questions about the company's people-management philosophy, internal communications, opportunities, compensation practices, diversity programs, etc.

The full list and related stories appear in the January 22 issue of Fortune, available on newsstands January 15 and at www.fortune.com today.
