Walt Disney Co., Lockheed Martin, and Deloitte & Touche are three best companies for new college graduates to launch a career, according to a ranking by BusinessWeek magazine.

The magazine said it gave Disney the nod as the best place to launch a career because of the company's on-campus recruiting, benefits, and a collaborative culture that stresses creativity.

For its "Best Places to Launch a Career" ranking, the magazine compared companies by looking at surveys from students, college career counselors, and employers (asking companies about pay, benefits, career advancement, and training programs).

The employer survey accounted for 50 percent of the final ranking, and the other two surveys accounted for 25 percent each, according to the magazine.

While college students ranked Disney as the most desirable employer, the company came in at 36th in the survey of college career counselors. The company's rank for the employer survey was fifth.

Lockheed Martin came in at fifth on both the college students' ranking and career counselors' ranking. The company's employer-survey rank was fourth.

Deloitte & Touche was second on the college career counselors' ranking and seventh in the student survey. The company's rank for the employer survey was 21st.

The Department of State came in as the sixth best place to launch a career, making it the top public employer in the ranking.

The ranking appears in the September 18, 2006 issue of the magazine, on newsstands today. The top 10 companies on the list follow. The complete ranking includes 55 companies.
