CareerMosaic study shows more non-technical types using web

Writers, teachers, secretaries and other non-technical types are increasingly turning to the Internet to find employment, according to a new ranking of Top 25 jobs searched via the Web by CareerMosaic.

The CareerMosaic Index released today finds that job seekers on the Web are looking for a broader range of interests and job titles, such as writer, teacher, and executive. The index was compiled by analyzing the most popular on-line job searches by position during the first six months of 1999.

The Index found that by far the most popular searches were "manager/management," with 1,763,471 searches. The second most frequent search was "sales" totaling 827,685, followed by "engineer" with 642,723, "accounting" with 468,739 and "marketing" with 430,465.

Job seeking on the Internet reflects the widening use of computers, with searches for "legal/law" professionals (No.15), "teachers" (No.16), "customer service representatives" (No.17), "medical" professionals (No.20), "writers" (No.23), "executives" (No.24), and "entry level" positions (No.25), cracking the CareerMosaic index.

"The pool of job seekers using the Internet to find employment continues to expand in all professional areas, including customer service, secretarial, and, not surprisingly, entry level positions," said Bernard S. Hodes, president, CareerMosaic. "While computer and engineering jobs are still widely sought, this survey shows that the Web is increasingly becoming mainstream."

Other non-technical jobs and professions within the most popular 25 jobs searched were "administrative" at No.7, with 373,601 searches; "finance," No.8, with 351,165 searches, "consulting," No.18, with 154,151 searches and "medical" No.20 with 148,630 searches.

The 25 most desired jobs or fields according to the number of positions searched are:
