Chestnut Petroleum Dist., Inc. has agreed to pay 767 employees a total of $900,000 in back wages and a $100,000 penalty to the federal government to resolve a U.S. Department of Labor lawsuit alleging violations of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division alleged that the company--which has 37 gas station/convenience store locations in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut--paid employees less than the federal minimum wage and failed to compensate employees properly for overtime hours worked. The division’s investigators also concluded that the company failed to keep required records that showed, among other things, the hours worked each day, total hours worked each week, and rates of pay for many of the employees.

In settling the lawsuit, the company continued to deny the allegations.

Taking steps to ensure that your company complies with wage and hour regulations helps avoid costly penalties.

Compensation.BLR.com's FLSA Wage and Hour information will clearly and concisely provide you with all the required information and tools so that you thoroughly know your obligations. Compensation.blr.com offers practical plain-English advice to keep you in compliance with the law.
