Apprenticeship Training
National Summary
Traditionally, an apprenticeship is a structured program for occupational skill development that combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training. Apprentices develop their knowledge and skills until they meet industry-recognized standards and achieve journeyworker status in a trade or profession. Traditional apprenticeship programs last 2 to 4 years, depending on the occupation. In addition to traditional apprenticeship programs, newer approaches to apprenticeships are based on an individual's demonstrated competency of the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to perform a trade or craft.
