National Summary
Statistical information showing trends in employment and wages can be a useful planning tool for employers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases monthly data on payroll and unemployment. BLS also releases a monthly report on the Cost-of-Living Index (CPI). In addition, The Conference Board reports on the volume of employment advertisements placed in papers across the country. Trends showing increases in payrolls, the CPI and/or employment advertisements in conjunction with decreases in unemployment may indicate a tightening labor market and increasing pressure to raise wages. Employers can use this data to evaluate wage rates and staffing needs so that they can maintain their competitive positions in the labor market.
