Hevesi said the Wall Street bonuses grew by an estimated 15.5 percent in 2005 to reach a record level of $21.5 billion, up from $18.6 billion in 2004 and the previous record of $19.5 billion in 2000.

"The industry paid record bonuses based on exceptional revenue growth and solid profits," Hevesi said.

Average bonuses in 2005 are more than $25,000 higher than bonuses paid in 2000 at the peak of the last Wall Street boom.
